I was born with two strikes against me, being black and being a woman. My race and gender directly influences my work as an artist because my subject is often the Black Urban Culture. Through performance art, I set out to evoke emotions and start conversations by appealing to all the senses of my viewers. I find that connection creates an immediate bond that blurs the boundaries between myself, as an artist, and my audience, as viewers. The shift in roles speaks to my interests surrounding identity and the self. Much of my work is about translating the black experience into something that is tangible and familiar. I deal with social issues is society that are covered in layers of covert tactics to make them seem less unjust than what they truly are.
